Bias Against Pregnant Surgical Residents

“Women who become pregnant during their surgical residency still face negative reactions from other trainees and faculty, according to a new survey.

Among 749 recently minted female surgeons, 67% indicated that some stigma was attached to pregnancy during their training, although that was less (P<0.001) than the 76% of women in surgical practice for at least 30 years who believed it was frowned upon when they were trainees, according to Patricia L. Turner, MD, of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago, and colleagues.

Many younger surgeons (those in practice for nine years or less) also recalled encountering favorable attitudes toward pregnancy from some peers and mentors, whereas hardly any of those who trained in the 1970s or earlier remembered seeing any such support, Turner and colleagues reported online inĀ Archives of Surgery.

But these supportive individuals were still heavily outnumbered by residents and faculty — mostly but not entirely male — who were disapproving of pregnancy during training.”
